NEW: What causes dizziness?
90 MILLION Americans go to healthcare providers because of vertigo, dizziness, or balance problems.
It’s the 2nd most common complaint heard in a doctor’s office near me and will occur in 70% of the nation’s population at some time in their lives, with mild to severe head and/or trauma being a leading risk factor for dizziness. Sadly, there are 2 million new cases of traumatic brain injury every year.
Getting a handle on vertigo and dizziness can sometimes leave your head spinning ... Why?
We all have different ways of explaining our sensations, so things can get a bit mottled. We're not saying that someone is wrong in their descriptions of how they feel, but rather that we all have slightly different ways of explaining how we feel as individuals.
So, what are the most common descriptions of dizziness?
VERTIGO - false sense of motion, possibly spinning sensation
DISEQUILIBRIUM - off-balance or wobbly
PRESYNCOPE - feeling of losing consciousness or blacking out
LIGHTHEADEDNESS - vague symptoms, feeling disconnected from the environment
The incidence of dizziness with a head injury or vertigo initially after whiplash has been reported to be as high as 78 to 80 percent. This phenomenon can be described as “Cervicogenic Dizziness” or dizziness of suspected cervical origin. In plain English, it's a problem coming from the neck, aka cervical region.
Head trauma and whiplash injuries ... are NECK INJURIES! That’s Keystone’s territory! According to Harvard Medical School, whiplash and it's secondary symptoms can occur at speeds as low as 8-10 mph ... which is not very fast. The most common mechanisms of head trauma and/or whiplash are:
Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs)
Sports Injury (single or multiple)
Trips and/or Falls
At Keystone Upper Cervical Spine Clinic, we focus on identifying and correcting what's known as
Atlas Displacement Complex (Click HERE for more information on ADC). In our clinical experience and published reviews, reducing an ADC can be a natural solution for dizziness. Most folks typically acquire an ADC from one of the 3 mechanisms above; however, with an increase in technology usage, a fourth mechanism is fast becoming a poor postural habit.
Are there other possible causes for Vertigo and/or Dizziness? Of course. This is when an appropriate examination from an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist or a Neurologist is incredibly helpful. Truth be told, most patients end up referred to our office after these evaluations and relevant treatments have already been performed.
