NEW: What causes dizziness?

Dr. Cameron Bearder

90 MILLION Americans go to healthcare providers because of vertigo, dizziness, or balance problems.

It’s the 2nd most common complaint heard in a doctor’s office near me and will occur in 70% of the nation’s population at some time in their lives, with mild to severe head and/or trauma being a leading risk factor for dizziness. Sadly, there are 2 million new cases of traumatic brain injury every year.

Getting a handle on vertigo and dizziness can sometimes leave your head spinning ... Why?

We all have different ways of explaining our sensations, so things can get a bit mottled. We're not saying that someone is wrong in their descriptions of how they feel, but rather that we all have slightly different ways of explaining how we feel as individuals.

So, what are the most common descriptions of dizziness?

  • VERTIGO - false sense of motion, possibly spinning sensation

  • DISEQUILIBRIUM - off-balance or wobbly

  • PRESYNCOPE - feeling of losing consciousness or blacking out

  • LIGHTHEADEDNESS - vague symptoms, feeling disconnected from the environment

The incidence of dizziness with a head injury or vertigo initially after whiplash has been reported to be as high as 78 to 80 percent. This phenomenon can be described as “Cervicogenic Dizziness” or dizziness of suspected cervical origin. In plain English, it's a problem coming from the neck, aka cervical region.

Head trauma and whiplash injuries ... are NECK INJURIES! That’s Keystone’s territory! According to Harvard Medical School, whiplash and it's secondary symptoms can occur at speeds as low as 8-10 mph ... which is not very fast. The most common mechanisms of head trauma and/or whiplash are:

  1. Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs)

  2. Sports Injury (single or multiple)

  3. Trips and/or Falls

PubMed article: C1 atlas displacement linked to neck issues and vertigo; natural vertigo relief and treatment. Lake Norman chiropractor insights.
Research shows that if you cannot turn your neck well, it can lead to problems. Poor neck posture at the C1-C2 level can create tension in your muscles and ligaments. Our deep neck muscles, ligaments, and high cervical joint capsules are mainly responsible for proprioceptive activation. Tension in this vital region was identified as the likely source of neck pain and dizziness.

At Keystone Upper Cervical Spine Clinic, we prioritize identifying and correcting what is known as Atlas Displacement Complex (ADC). If you want to learn more about ADC and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care, please follow the hyperlink. Our clinical experience and published reviews show that reducing an ADC can be an effective natural solution for dizziness. Most individuals typically develop an ADC due to one of the three above-mentioned mechanisms. However, with the increasing use of technology, a fourth mechanism—poor posture—is becoming a significant concern.

Are there other possible causes of vertigo and dizziness? Absolutely. This is why a thorough examination by an Ear Nose and Throat doctor or a Neurologist can be extremely beneficial. Many of our patients are referred to our office by their medical doctor after undergoing a medical exam and formal evaluation(s). You may feel frustrated if your visits to these specialists have left you with more questions than answers, negative results, and still no relief. If this is the case, Keystone Spine Clinic may be the solution you have hoped for.

If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the symptoms or conditions mentioned in this blog and are experiencing unresolved dizziness, there is a good chance we can help!
